  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an instrument technician, specialising in fiscal metering which includes measuring, testing, repairing measurement equipment on a daily basis. I am responsible for my own monthly allocated work load which is required to be complete every calendar month. My work load is managed by myself, which allows me to be flexible from day to day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Considerable amount of new skills have been learnt over my apprenticeship and I continue to learn now that I am out of my time. I completed my apprenticeship with a HNC Electrical Engineering Certificate and a Level 3 NVQ in Instrumentation and Control. All of these qualifications and skills set me up to carry out my daily tasks safely and confidently.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Work is work; it is mostly interesting when plant and equipment fail and you get to fault find and learn more about the electrical systems. The team plays a big part in the enjoyment of my job; making good working relations between co-workers makes the job a pleasure.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by British Gas?
  • I work for Centrica which is part of British Gas; I believe it is a good place to work, you are recognised for your good work and efforts as well as rewarded from time to time when appropriate.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My apprenticeship was well organised carrying out monthly reviews in interview style about the day to day tasks we carried out to ensure we were learning every step of the way. We were rotated around different departments to give a wide range of skills which we could then later choose to develop.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My training provider was an external college located 5 minutes away from my work site so getting someone to talk to was never an issue. Help was readily accessible both on site and offsite from both tutors, co-workers and my boss.

  • Help was readily accessible both on site and offsite from both tutors, co-workers and my boss. My boss and internal assessors were keen to help you through all stages of my apprenticeship and also times there after when required.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary is much appreciated throughout every year of my apprenticeship incrementing on an annual basis.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I get involved in carers fairs and mini team challenges within the local community. We as a company took part in many Brathey Trust events and also carried out a lot of voluntary work supported by my company.

  • Yes

  • I believe my experience has been a good one, and think that many others like me would enjoy the experience as much as I did.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to British Gas?
  • Make an effort to understand their company strategy and what their day to day tasks involve. The more you know about the company you are applying for, the more keen they will be in employing you - it shows that you are interested in the company you are wanting to become part of!
