As an Instrument apprentice I experience lots of different types of work across all types of instrumentation. Calibrations, repairs and faultfinding make up the bulk of the work but there is always something new I haven't worked on.
In addition to the recognised qualifications, I have learnt new skills and developed existing ones. Use of all types of hand tools and computer systems is commonplace.
I fully enjoy my program, the nature of the job and all the people I work with in my team. The culture towards apprentices is great and everybody is happy to help.
I feel very valued, even as a young apprentice. Appreciation from colleagues and management is clear and I am always asked to get involved where I can.
Structure could be improved but some of this was out of the company's control. A dedicated apprenticeship adviser would be helpful. Support is very good however.
Support from my training provider is adequate. Assistance through my NVQ was very good from one particular member of staff.
Support from my employer is second to none. The support culture is excellent and I never feel uneasy asking for additional support.
Salary is adequate for me as travel costs are minimal. Could be increased as apprentices gain qualifications as I completed mine early and this should be rewarded in my opinion.
External opportunities are good, if limited. The annual apprentice event is a good way to connect with the new intake of apprentices and get to know others before they come onto site full-time.
Yes
Overall, I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship and would recommend this to anybody who is interested in the field. I believe Centrica provide one of the best apprenticeships and prepare apprentices for a successful career.
Research the role you are applying for and ensure this is something you would like to do as a potential lifetime career prior to committing. Remain open minded and say yes to every opportunity.
