Metering Instrument Technician at Centrica's Barrow Gas Terminals - completed apprenticeship in 2015. Carry out maintenance on fiscal metering systems (that measure export production gas and condensate) by performing calibrations of instruments to high tolerances. Instrumentation I work with include flow meters, pressure, density and temperature transmitters and gas quality analysers. Centrica's revenue is based off the total production from the terminal, therefore ensuring this is measured correctly is a critical job. Not only were we taught to perform tasks to a high standard but also with personal and process safety in mind. I work in a within team of six metering technicians as part of the larger instrumentation department.
Throughout the apprenticeship I developed hands-on skills in the role I carry out on a day to day basis, with on the job training and external training courses, while also developing my background academic knowledge at college. I have completed my NC and HNC in Electrical Engineering and have progressed onto the degree, which I'm being sponsored through.
Very enjoyable, working with good team that are happy to pass on their knowledge.
Valued and recognized when I have achieved. This has been proven by the fact that Centrica have sponsored me to continue my studies at college with the degree.
Very structured with on the job training, and progress meetings with managers and training supervisors where targets can be set and any concerns can be raised.
Training supervisors both in work and at college were happy to help with any concerns that may be present.

The salary and package is good from my experience as I lived in the area.
Centrica encourage you to partake in any social and community events, as well as numerous team bonding exercises.
