Apprentice Electrical Engineer - Shadowing Electricians and Engineers across the SIT Lincoln site in departments such as: Controls, Maintenance, Test and Packaging. Learning the required hands on skills to become a qualified engineer, whilst completing qualifications such as NVQ LVL3 and HND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
New skills have been learnt/developed by spending time in each department. These include learning how to safely complete: servicing, installation work, fault finding/diagnostics on machines/PLC's, cable glanding, panel wiring and controls/instrumentation. Qualifications gained include HND, NVQ3 and necessary safety training.
There have been some problems during the apprenticeship, but overall the experience has been good. Higher level qualifications have been gained whilst working in an area of interest.
The training level given is excellent, this shows that Siemens value progression. Some parts of the site can be a little slow for apprentices as there is no given task, but once used to the environment suitable tasks can be found if apprentices speak up.
At first sight the programme seems well structured, but it soon becomes apparent there are problems as previously mentioned. New NVQ assessors have now been hired meaning some of the problems are being ironed out.
College gave support as required. Assessors at work for NVQ gave support but it was limited as they also have to complete their jobs. This is being fixed as more assessors are being hired.
Support received from employer is good, any requirements are usually met without hassle. The HR team seem to be moving everything online which seems to be a step backwards in some areas.
First few wages are low and it would be hard to live in your own home. Wages seem to be changing from previous years and some wage rises removed which isn't great.
Voluntary activities always available such as helping at careers events or filming. These are usually emailed around so everybody has a chance to do them.
Yes
It is a great place to work, which allows you to gain higher level qualifications in an area which is interesting and different every day.
Be prepared for a long assessment day before going to an interview. Don't be put off if you already have level 3 or HNC level qualifications on entry.
