  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is as an assistant in our corporate tax department, on a daily basis I prepare tax returns and computations for small-medium companies. Day-to-day I interact with other members of staff in my department- especially if they are the client contact. I also interact with other departments, who often share client responsibilities. I am also able to contact clients directly if we are missing vital information or to give them payment advise. In preparing a tax computation, I am responsible for ensuring all information is included and the computation and all outstanding review points are cleared.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently studying and working towards my ATT qualification- which is a tax technical qualification. This is helping me build the technical skills I need for my career in tax. My study consists of external courses with the BPP provider. BPP also provide me with the personal skills and behaviors needed for my chosen career path- I have to complete reflective statements once a month outlining how I've used certain skills such as planning, communication, team work etc in the workplace. In terms of internal training, we often have tax updates provided by the RSM training managers, this keeps us up to date with all the tax legislation changes meaning we are able to do our job with all the relevant information

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme and have made a good choice- it is better than I expected. I felt very welcome when joining the team and everyone was a great help in ensuring I seamlessly fit in to the team- there was always someone available and willing if I had a question whether it was technical or not. As soon as I joined the firm I was given a buddy from the team- this was someone who I went for a coffee with every few weeks- this person was great at ensuring I was fitting in and was there to speak to about concerns I have.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by RSM?
  • I feel very valued in the firm- once a month i have a catch up with my manager who is great at giving me feedback from other colleagues. This lets me know what im doing well and what could be better. From day one i was fully involved in proper tasks rather than being left to make tea and file documents. This made me feel valued from day one as i was doing valued tasks and able to progress from the first day

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • In terms of BPP who externally provide my training, I was given clear starting instructions and relevant documents in preparation for staring my studies. I have a training manager at both BPP and RSM who are great at supporting my studies and concerns and are both very easy to contact. One a month i have a telephone conference with my training managers and line manager where we discuss how everything's going and set targets and objectives- this ensures i cant 'slip through the net' and be forgotten which is motivating. From the start my programme was well organised and i was given all this information well in advance of my start date.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I feel like my training providers are very accessible- any emails are promptly replied to in a friendly and helpful manner, i never feel like i am bothering them. On many occasions i have had additional questions and concerns which have all been addressed incredibly well. On a few occasions they have had to make further phone calls and emails to answer my queries which never seems to be a problem

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • For me, i live very close to the office so travel costs isn't a concern. It easily covers my living and daily costs. It covers my social costs if i don't go too crazy! One a few occasions ive been in a position where i cant afford to do certain social activities but budgeting can help this.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are always social events going on for example after work drinks or evening activities like wine tasting or meals out. I have been involved in a few volunteer events, for example i was able to represent RSM at an a-level careers day where i could talk to students about what we have on offer here. There is a lot of emphasis on getting people to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh award through the company but i didn't take part in this

  • 9. Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • For all the points ive mentioned above- a great training programme and great support. I know that i will be able to reach my desired career path without the uni fees.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSM?
  • The application process is very quick- i had my assessment days and interviews within a few weeks of applying. I would advise other to do this quickly as spaces fill up quickly. I would also advise to do a few practice tests of the psychometric assessment day tests to make it easier when it come to it.
