  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a software apprentice (programmer) and currently I am on rotation in the Business Improvement department. I am learning something new every day with a group of people that are really fun. I get to solve various problems in the company, so it can be more efficient.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned problem solving techniques, lean practices and improved on my coding skills. I've also improved on my business knowledge and how a company works, which I think is really important for any person early in their career.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really like the team and the company. We go to many social events and I think that helps make the team more effective. I've made some really close friends at work, so close that myself and the other apprentices are getting a house together!

  • 4. How valued do you feel by L-3 TRL?
  • Even though L3 is a massive corporation, where I work has a family feel. The managers treat you as equals and there's a very laid back feel. Someone is always there to offer advice or lend a hand which is great.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From TRL's side there is loads of support with mentoring programmes and setting up all the software I requested to further my coding knowledge. The apprenticeship company however can be a little un supportive with the amount of course material they provide. This being said, TRL are great at putting us in touch with people round the business that can help us out when we are struggling.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The course material from QA isn't the worst, but I would expect more. The support from lecturers isn't great either. However, the support given to us my the course mentor is good and he is a really helpful chap.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • They are really good with bridging the gap from stuff picked up from University and it's real world application. They pay for everything when we go to University, which is really great because they are investing in you.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I'm being payed what I expected for the role I am doing, but each month is difficult. I think that is a reflection of the current cost of living, rather than I am underpaid. I think what they are paying me is fair which is hard to find when you start your career.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • TRL is great for doing activities out of work. Two weeks we went on a company funded go-karting event with the other apprentices and last week the business improvement team played bowling against the supply chain team. I'm in a band with 3 other apprentices and a load of us will go down the pub after work. It's great.

  • 9. Would you recommend L-3 TRL to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The opportunities they provide, the culture and the work is cutting edge technology. I've achieved so much since starting here and grown as a person. Plus the people are great.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to L-3 TRL?
  • Make sure you are someone that adapts to change well and someone that is keen to learn, because you could be doing something different every day. Make sure that you find a cheap house share before you move. Don't get a flat on your own as it will cost you so much more.
