As it stands I am currently working in the Sky Kids team learning Java and about Android Studio so that i can join working on the Android part of the Sky Kids App. Previously i was in a team with 5 other apprentices making a Water Taxi transport app where we displayed the location of the water taxi in leeds on a map so people could see when and where to catch it from.
I have learned many new skills in my 8 months here which include: Agile methodology, More developed HTML, CSS and Javascript skills, Learned the basics and moving onto more in depth detail in Java and Android Studio
I have recently while being put into a real team and being tutored properly and correctly mainly by two Android developers here called [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] who have put alot of effort in to tutoring me, I have started to really enjoy my role and as before got abit irritating as we didn't really have anyway to learn stuff without researching online.
In my time i can tell that they although know i dont know alot at this current time try to involve me as much as possible, also the amount of socials and things that Sky run aswell as having the day in day out working schedule
Towards the start due to issues with our original tutor during bootcamp telling us the wrong information we had quite alot of problems but Sky where it has had the chance tried to correct this issue that happend with the 3rd part company they used for the first month of training, but recently with being put in real teams our days are more structured and leave us to kind of take hold of our own apprenticeship
Our training provider [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] is a hard guy to understand sometimes, he always means well but the way he can come across and his asks in terms of coursework alongside the work we already have to do can be pretty ridiculous at times and can put alot of stress on us, but the best way to handle it is try be honest with him and if he overflows you just do what you can in the time you have, as thats all people can ask of you
Sky in terms of support is very good, especially in terms of my recent training from [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], as they have put aside alot of time and resources to make me feel involved in the project while still being able to learn.
Currently its not too bad, im not gonna say that i wouldnt want more as im 18 fresh out of college and moved out into Leeds and after rent, bills, food and some days of travel i am left with little to go and do stuff on weekends which generally has me waiting eagerly on each paycheck but i come from a relatively low income family so im used to it.
There are, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] our manager has pulled up alot of outside work stuff or stuff to do that isnt exactly work, as i am actually doing a talk for a college to help promote Sky in a couple of days and i have also signed up to do a Sports day to help out.
Yes
Because they are a big company and for one of my main reasons i have joined them, that working at company like this is a great way to start your career and or build on your career, the benefits can be very nice as well while having a pretty chilled out work place.
Just show that you can get on with people easily, try understand the new methodologies that the company uses and show interest in how they work and on your tests and interviews try your hardest even if you don't do well showing effort and asking for help can show alot.
