  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am doing the Broadcast Service Operations Apprenticeship. This is where you rotate around the different broadcast departments and gain experience in each of them over the two years. You follow on shift patterns alongside the full time employees so that you get a full experience of the working environment at Sky.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a vast amount of new skills and also developed a number of existing skills. Every day I am learning something new, this is great as you are very quickly learning how things work in the broadcast industry. Regularly assessed to ensure that my learning is still developing as it should. This ensures correct training plans are in place.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am very glad that I decided to do this apprenticeship. The combination of both work and learning all at once is something I really enjoy. Being a part of a team makes you feel like you are contributing to the overall goal which is great as you are given responsibility which is a great way to learn under pressure.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Sky?
  • I have received a number of messages from management which makes you want to work harder. The more you feel valued the better the overall experience is I feel. You are often involved in high priority projects which means you will often see how well you work as a part of a team to achieve a huge end goal.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is organised in a good way. training schedules are in place for you which means you are always learning. if you ever felt like it wasn't right, you would have people to go to who could help with that. overall I feel it is a well structured programme with good support in place if needed.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • There is a monthly meeting with the training provider. This is where they will assess you on the work you have provided over the past month. They offer support throughout the month if you require it which is good to know in case you have any issues with your training. Also I feel that the monthly meetings are very good as they are a good indication of how you are developing.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is as much support as you will ever need. If anything is wrong you firstly have your line manager who will try and help in any way that they can. If they can't help then they will point you in the direction of where you can go. There are plenty of resources available that will tell you who can support you and how to contact them. I feel this is very good at Sky.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is very good for the apprenticeship. It means you can earn a full time wage whilst you are learning. This means that you can cover all living, travel and any other costs and still in my experience have money which you can save. This is a great incentive to help you through the apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are occasionally volunteering events which are offered to you as a part of your employment at Sky. They are keen to help the local and wider community using volunteers. There are also sometimes social events organised which are great to help build relationships with colleagues in your team. There are also facilities on site such as a gym which is a great perk of working for Sky.

  • I feel that Sky are the leaders in the broadcast industry with the best professionals who can help you to learn the very best information. Also the employee benefits at Sky are brilliant which is another great reason to work for them.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sky?
  • Ensure that you put in a lot of research on Sky as a company. Have a vast knowledge of the products on offer and the customers that we provide a service for. Be confident in your abilities throughout the application process as this shows through when you are being assessed. Also make sure that you read about shift patterns and that you would be happy with them.
