During the Business Insight Week, I shadowed 3 different departments: Tax, Consultancy and Audit. Every morning I would meet my mentor, shadow their work for a while as they explained the tasks that they were doing, sometimes being able to contribute myself. During the day, my mentors would allow me to sit in on important, informative meetings, as well as making appointments for me with people in different positions so I could ask questions and learn about the culture at PwC. Near the end of the day, we blogged and recorded our experiences, available for all the other interns across the country to see. As well as this, there were daily interactive podcasts on different topics such as the skills employers want. The last day consisted of a challenge - I was teamed up with interns from my region, and we took part in a business task in which we had present our ideas to a real client.
Yes, meeting and speaking with different types of people helped my communication skills, as well as my ability to ask good questions. Presenting our ideas on the last day really helped me with public speaking, all while maintaining professionalism.
It was a fun experience, through which I made a few friends and built on some of my weaker skills. The programme was very enjoyable and met my expectations, the day wasn't always filled with work and my mentors were easy to get along with.
The staff at PwC and the mentors were extremely helpful and inviting. The internship was only for a week, but was paid! I still receive emails from PwC telling me about new opportunities and things I can get involved in.
The induction was very informative, and the mentors seemed to plan things out well and made sure my day was busy. However, it would've been nicer to be able to get more involved in the work rather than just shadowing.
The induction gave me all the information I needed, the right people were easy to contact if any guidance was needed, and mentors were always available to speak to.
I felt very supported, I had access to the email of the week's coordinator and she was very supportive - in fact she was the one who led the podcasts so it was nice to see her being directly involved.
Travel costs were more than covered for me, I shadowed in Leeds and was paid just over £7 an hour. Other places such as London had a higher rate, but this was more than enough.
The programme was short so it was hard to fit in other activities outside of work, however, a group of us went out to eat lunch one day, and the office was located in the centre of Leeds so it was easy to find things to do after/places to eat for lunch.
Yes
PwC is an open, inviting environment which is filled with employees who are motivated and thrive for more. This is really inspiring to see and can be a very motivating experience.
Do your practise tests for the online assessments, and as for the interview make sure you are prepared for the typical questions such as why PwC? what are you hoping to get out of this experience? It would also be useful to think of a real life recent business issue you feel comfortable discussing.
