  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I manage a cross government website as well as organise huge events for senior civil servants. I worked within the Comms team so was in charge of the comms that was sent out through a weekly bulletin board and a newsletter.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have built up various skills such as team work and working independently, I've been given a lot of responsibility to show off my skills. I've increased my communication skills by working in a comms role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme itself hasn't been great at all, the job side is amazing but the actual apprenticeship is very poor. You are treated like you are in secondary school and their organisational skills are poor.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Civil Service?
  • I think this has been an up and down experience, when I first started I weren't recognised for any work, however over time I did feel valued, until I moved roles, and now I don't feel valued at all.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • So poorly, I've now had 7 different assessors for some reason and majority of them are incapable of delivering the course, even after promising that they've been doing it for X amount of time.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I used to receive hardly any, they were incapable of teaching us the course, however my new assessors used to teach the previous cohort and they understand it, and have been giving excellent support.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • So much! I couldn't be more grateful to my line manager as she is very understanding and she's been supportive throughout the whole process. I've had two line managers and both have been great. • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • It's a good salary don't get me wrong, however a huge chunk of it is spent on travel costs and living costs which is not great! It'd be good to get paid a bit more to cover the costs, but I'm not complaining.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are several opportunities, but due to a lot of travelling, I do not participate in any as I find myself working very long days and due to the location, it's hard to get involved in these events.

  • 9. Would you recommend Civil Service to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I'd recommend it to anyone that wants a great experience. I wanted to go to university but once I found out what I'd be doing, I was amazed and I have enjoyed the whole experience. You meet so many different people from different backgrounds and get involved in lots of different pieces of work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Civil Service?
  • I'd advise just being yourself, be the best you can and to encourage you to reach your potential as you can go so far within the Civil Service and there are endless amounts of opportunities available.
