  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently working as an electrical site engineer involved with the design, planning, procurement and overall management of the LV electrical services planned for installation on my project in 2018.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting with LOR, I have had many opportunities to gain new skills and obtain various qualifications. I have been on several internal training modules as part of my programme and have also been on specialist training for my chosen profession. I will also be completing a BEng Engineering degree funded by LOR this summer.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have a great team built up around me for support and always know I can ask for help or advice when needed. Aside from this, the industry in general is a great place to make friends and socialize, with the company keen for internal interaction. I have thoroughly enjoyed my past 3-4 years working for the company and I look forward to what happens after the programme is finished.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Laing O'Rourke?
  • I receive regular recognition from my managers for the work I have been doing, and this is reflected with the responsibility I have gained over the past few years as well as the benefits I have received.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There are many elements to the programme I am on that are structured around my learning and progression through the company, as well as ensuring that all new starters have good exposure to all of the goings on around the company. As mentioned I have a great support network from my team as well as programme sponsors.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • As my training mainly consists of university studies I have had regular support from the university and my colleagues when required. I attend one day a week and have an opportunity each week to speak with my tutors if required.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer provides me with a lot of support during my studies at university. They are keen to see me succeed and offer me support and advice with university work if I am struggling.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I receive a fair salary and plenty of benefits that really help with costs that I would otherwise have to pay for myself. I have all my travel into work and university paid for and have also received a company car for business and personal use. My university is also fully funded by my employer which means I don't not have to worry about paying back student loans.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The company regularly organizes social events for parts of the company to meet up, carry out CPDs and generally socialize with colleagues. They are also well connected to local charities and communities that we have the opportunity to volunteer for.

  • 9. Would you recommend Laing O'Rourke to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Working for Laing O'Rourke has set me up with a solid foundation for a good career ahead of me and put me in a position where I should never be out of work. The work is interesting, challenging and diverse which means I am rarely left idol. The industry is ever-changing and I am LOR is at the forefront of that.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
  • When applying ensure you have a well structured application and show enthusiasm to why you wish to work within the construction industry. There are many opportunities to shine throughout the interview stages so take the time to prepare and make the most out of it.
