MEP Trainee Review

MEP Trainee- managing and overviewing the mechanics and electronics of my site. I regularly communication with the contractors to ensure works are being carried out. Factory visits are necessary in order to make sure on site works can be carried out as planned

HNC Level 4 in building service engineering is currently being achieved. General internal training courses are being done at various levels with employees and contractors within Mace

Work well with my team, as we are quite small and communicate well with each other. The overall Mace company really care about apprentices which is really encouraging to know. I know that I can develop myself further within Mace and will have/ know where to find the correct guidance to do so.

I am thought of no different to any other employee respect wise. However a reminder is sometimes needed to that I am only an apprentice who still has a lot to learn. My opinion is not always considered because of my experience but this is something to expect when a large scale job needs to be completed. Again this also means time is a struggle to ensure I am learning the most I can but occasional time is set aside to catch up and understand what I am doing.

I have a check list training plan that needs to be completed before the end of my 4 years. The information I use to complete this varies, whether it be from on site discussions or reading up on topics. Although I can tick off the sections of my training program I have been asked to, I still know that I am a distance away from the actual understanding that I need

I only do day release for study which can be a struggle as there is only so much you can fit into that short space of time. You are still however expected to have full qualification at the end of the years as well as managing a high quantity of assignments. I need to balance my time better in order to achieve the work- education balance but at time it seems unrealistic, when at work I can only do work and vice versa. I have a good relationship with my tutors and feel comfortable approaching them with questions, but again I only have one opportunity a week to do this.

It is quite strict that I do college work in my own time which I feel to sometimes be unrealistic due to quantity of time I have outside of work. My manager is happy to answer any questions I have to aid my assignment and when problems have risen with my course provider, HR have answered and action my questions well. Support is fair, but I do find myself finding my own working as I am aware of the load that my Manager has that he is unable to pass onto me due to my experience.

travel expenses are a key thing that without I would struggle to meet my needs. I do not need to pay for my education which is a big encouragement. My day to day costs and living costs are managed okay.

not many company activities that I am personally aware of. Regular drinks are organised with my site team which helps me build my relationship with them. I have volunteered for a few things under Mace which they press very strongly on.

very open to development with the company and there is a strong support system. I have no problems that if I have a real concern that there are people available who will happily sit down and help me. You are not treated as an apprentice which helps you mature quickly.

be thorough with your application as it discussed in your interview so tell the truth and do not make it up. it is group interview with team building, you do not need to be the loudest but if you have something to say, it would be pointless keeping it to yourself no matter how outrageous you may think it to be. Do NOT be late. The only person that was not successful from my interview was late. I got a day on site before I made my final decision about Mace which not everyone did and I found it very useful. Do not need any construction experience but it is not for the un fit. You are walking up and down stairs consistently all day, so be prepared.
