  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently undertaking the Civil Service Fast Track Apprenticeship Scheme and simultaneously working as a Work Coach within one of the establishments JobCentres. This involves working closely with claimants in order to ensure they are ready for work, or actively seeking work depending on their individual circumstances.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • By the end of the course I will have received an NVQ in business administration, as well as an HNC in business admin. On top of that, I am currently undertaking training in order to receive accreditation for my Work Coach roll. Interpersonal skills are developed daily in this line of work as well.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the extensive learning opportunities within the programme, as well as the helpfulness of my colleagues and line manager. However I feel that the apprenticeship team could be more proactive in contacting myself and other new apprentices as there seems to be very little contact from the beginning of the apprenticeship.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Civil Service?
  • I feel incredibly values by the Civil Service, and am shown the utmost respect by all colleagues and managers that I have came into contact with. Again though, contact from staff associated with the apprenticeship could be more forthcoming, although I am sure this will grow as the apprenticeship develops.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel that whilst the Civil Service structure itself is very well organised, more work could be done to improve the apprenticeship. I am very well supported though by colleagues and managers alike.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have had very little to no contact with the training provider involved within the apprenticeship yet, although I have been made aware that it can take some time for these relationships to develop. I have no doubt that the training provider will be incredibly forthcoming with their support throughout my apprenticeship, but I feel that this relationship should have been established from the day I started the apprenticeship.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line manager and colleagues within the Jobcentre are incredibly helpful and supportive. They are always available to offer guidance, support and are consistently friendly and helpful.

    10/10

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary itself is incredibly generous compared to other apprenticeships in Scotland, however it can be a slight struggle once all expenditure is taken into account.

    7/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I have been made aware of opportunitiesd such as HASSRA and mylifestyle, both of which are set up in order to allow employees access to a wide range of discounts and deals for outside of work, as well as access to communities that can enhance an individual's social life, such as sports clubs and recreational activities outside of work.

    9/10

  • 9. Would you recommend Civil Service to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel that the Civil Service is a solid career choice, with a wide range of unique opportunities within itself that cater to most individual career tastes.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Civil Service?
  • I would adise that applicants are patient with their applications, as the application process can take time. However, once that process is completed the career that comes with it is immensely enjoyable. I would recommend applying for a Civil Service role.
