  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I review and investigate complaints about academies, making final decisions and writing up reports based on my findings. I also help over see the CI strand planning, have helped put together training/away days, and help to improve our service for parents, academies, and our workers.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have completed many training courses which have improved my skills, have become much more organised, become a better writer, and feel much more confident taking on a wide range of tasks and roles within my department and out of it. I am now also a Mental Health First Aider

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the independence, getting to work with lovely people, and the responsibility. For the first time I feel as though I am being treated like an adult at work, which is wonderfully refreshing and encourages me to want to go above and beyond my expectations.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Civil Service?
  • I have received plenty of positive feedback and useful advice to improve. Whenever I am sick nobody has made me feel pressured to come in anyway, unlike every other job I've had.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Whilst the training for my current roles are lacking, I have brought this up and this is being looked into. I feel very supported by my colleagues.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I didn't receive nearly enough support for the first few months of employment, and was given little to no clue as to what my apprenticeship would entail. Once someone did get it touch they were very helpful, but before then I had no idea what the module-side of my apprenticeship would entail.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have regular meetings with my line manager, and am able to phone senior members of staff if I ever feel like I'm struggling. I felt unable to do this at first due to past experience, but I feel very cared about and valued here.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very well.

    10/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I am a member of the LGBT Network and a registered Mental Health First Aider, but other than that I haven't looked into other OOW activities.

    6/10

  • 9. Would you recommend Civil Service to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Great opportunity to learn and grow

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Civil Service?
  • The HR for QA is abysmal. Expect blanket emails asking for certificates and proof of address etc twenty times before you start. Some people I've met are still waiting on placements. Try not to panic when you're emailed at 5pm saying you have to respond to something by the next day (or your placement will be given to someone else) with no return email or phone number, so you have to google to find one, and then have nobody answer. The role itself is great but you're gonna go through a lot to get there.
