I am currently an apprentice Signalling operator for network rail and my day to day role involves going to any faults that have been identified on any railway circuits to do with signalling and repairing them so the circuit works as it should.
I spent the first 6 months of the apprenticeship staying in the midlands with many apprentices so I learned a lot of key life skills as well as learning or developing skills on what I would later be doing in my career.
I feel the programme is very demanding but offers so much in regards to all kinds of new skills to pathways to better my career. It is also interesting and never dull with what I have done so far.
I felt I was on equal grounds when I was down the the other apprentices but when I came up to my Home Depot I feel I have been accepted well in the team I have been assigned to. The staff have been very welcoming and helpful should I need assistance.
It was very organised for its first cohort to move into the Westwood training centre, there was occasional mishaps but that is to be expected when so many people are involved in the winning of a completely new thing. I'm sure it will continue to improve throughout the cohorts.
I received a lot of support and meetings to ask how I was getting on and if I needed any more assistance and I felt that if there was a problem I could speak to someone about it. There was no problems and have been so far but if there is I know I can talk to someone about it.
The employer offers me support if and when I need it and they aren't shy about asking if I'm okey and making sure I'm not struggling. I know the support will be there if that ever happens.
Once I qualify the salary/package is of a good standard where I will be able to progress myself as I get older.
There are numerous opportunities for all things in this kind of work. The work is so wide in terms of job that there is a need for any type of skill in this workplace.
Yes
It offers many different career pathways as well as giving you great life skills that will never leave you.
To try your best to get into the new advanced apprenticeship programme as it offers so much and is worth the 3 years of hard graft. It is very rewarding.
