  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an electrical maintenance technician I work as part of a team alongside other technicians to perform preventative maintenance and breakdown repair maintenance on a wide variety of electrical equipment on a nuclear power plant.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have received an NVQ level 2 in mechanical maintenance and control and instrumentation maintenance as well as an NVQ level 3 in electrical maintenance. I have obtained a BTEC level 3 diploma in performing engineering maintenance operations and am in the process of obtaining a HNC in Electrical engineering. I have also greatly developed my hand skills and my Engineering knowledge.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly have enjoyed my apprenticeship. I love my day to day job and what it involves, enjoy the workplace atmosphere and the colleagues I work with. However my initial two years training in Portsmouth was less enjoyable at some points.

  • I feel valued by team leaders, immediate managers and colleagues.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is largely well organised however it can seem at some points especially in the transition between initial training in Portsmouth and coming to work on site could be more organised with training and support for apprentices to help the transition.

  • Agreat amount of support.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A great amount of support is given to apprentices and going on to attain my HNC is greatly encouraged and supported.

  • Very well

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are plenty of outside activities/clubs that are available for all staff to get involved in.

  • 9. Would you recommend EDF to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel it is a fantastic way to gain the necessary qualification to enter the engineering/technician field with the ability to earn as you learn and gain hands on practical experience.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EDF?
  • Be prepared for interview, testing etc by doing research on the company and technical specifications of a nuclear power plant.
