  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My Job title is supply chain higher apprentice which involves rotating between 6 different placements within the supply chain function whilst completed a level 5 NVQ and undergraduate degree in business management. Day to day roles vary depending on the placement however, this can include: - managing external suppliers - working within an internal factory to plan material through the operations - project managing the implementation of new tools - working in both the production of new aeroengines and the service sector

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have a learning plan where I have a variety of both online courses and classroom courses I am expected to complete. These can range from personal skills including financial development, personal integrity, presentation skills to placement based training for example, learning about ERP systems.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme, I very much enjoy the high performance culture and values held at Rolls-Royce. It exceeds my expectations the amount of support and investment the business have in young people. We also get the chance to get involved in extra curricular activities.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Rolls-Royce?
  • I feel very valued whilst both in the apprentice academy and out on placement. Rolls-Royce has a culture of bringing young people through the organisation and this is definitely felt throughout the placements I have been too. I am given a great deal of responsibility to learn and develop, whilst being supported by a whole range of people from shop floor workers to executives.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very structured, all apprentices go through a 8 week induction process. We have ongoing training and support throughout the apprenticeship for both our placements and academic work through mentors. I completed understand my apprentice framework and the milestones and benchmarks I am expected to meet for my academic learning. I am also clear when I move placements and what each placement involves.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We have regular meetings with our apprentice development manager, weekly 1;1 meetings with our placement manager, forums with our course and committee meetings with university. This allows us to discuss what has been going well and even better ifs.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A great amount, the apprentice development team are our main feed of contact however, I have numerous other points of contact I can go to if I need to including operational health, HR and ethics contacts.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • It meets my costs because I live at home however, I imagine this would be more difficult for someone who has relocated. Having said this, there is a clear pathway and milestones to reach for pay rises. The opportunities at the end of the apprenticeship are great and so it is worth living off a lower wage for the long term outcome of achieving a substantive role with Rolls-Royce.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes a lot. We have STEM activities to get involved in, including the apprentice and graduates association who organise leisure events and major events including an annual charity ball. There is the Rolls-Royce leisure association who have a gym and sports classes going on.

  • 9. Would you recommend Rolls-Royce to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Rolls-Royce has given me the opportunity to study for a degree whilst working and gaining invaluable experience. I have got the opportunity to work with some fantastic people , whilst gaining experience and no university fees!


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce?
  • Make sure you understand the programme you are applying for, do the research on the topic and what the apprenticeship involves. It is important you understand what the apprenticeship is all about so you can understand whether you think it would suit you. Make sure you get relevant work experience as they like you to relate to your experience during the interviews and application process.
