I am an apprentice electro-mechanical engineer. My role involves me taking part in planned maintanance and machine improvements to factory breakdowns and repairs. I have daily tasks like machine inspections and testing. In my job i get to work with different people every shift and enjoy working with them all. there are lots of different projects on the go, each led by different people. my project involves me coordinating draftsmen and engineers to map out and label equipment in our factory.
i recieve a lot of training on my apprenticeship. Every monday, my company send me to my local college and i study with other young engineers from other companies. this gives me a good insite into the wider industry, and all the oppertunities available. There is also regular inhouse training courses, such as electrical regulations, food safety and health and safety.
I really enjoy my job. The people i work with are helpfull and friendly, the education that is provided is excelent. you are never treated like an idiot and no question is a stupid question. most of the people i work with or train me were in my position once, so they know how to treat me well, and give me the skills and knowladge i need.
The company treats the employees well. i get on well with my managers, and they will give praise to you when you have done something well. there is an oportunity in the daily meeting to give thanks and appretiation to those who you feel have done well, or gone above what was asked of them.
the programme i am on has been running for many years now, and has had time to develop and organise. there are still some areas for improvement however, for example, there does seem to be poor comunication between my employer, and my training provider, it often take several weeks for information to be passed on, and apprentices are sometimes used as middle men.
The training provider for me is my local college. there have been many complaints, from nestle, and other companies about the training provided there. it is often unhelpful information we are asked to learn, and the tutors can be very old-fasioned and blinkered in their teaching styles.
My employer provides excelent suport during my apprenticeship. if you ever have any troubles or questions, managers give their time to help you, and my colegues provide excelent guidence day to day.
When taking into acount my living costs, (rent, food, car, and insurence) i still often have several hundred pounds left each month to put into savings. After nearly two years in the job i have saved up for a house deposit. Nestle value their staff well.
The company often invites us to events such as bowling nights, christmas meals and parties. further to this, the social life at work is good. apprentices regularly go out to town on the weekends, and some even go on holiday together.
