Substation Craftsperson apprentice, Carrying out refurbishment and maintenance of national grid power transmission equipment. I work as part of the Staythorpe team in the NE2 region and we cover about 8 sites in total. Since passing my trainee competent person I am now able to counter sign and assist in leading jobs.
Since starting we have gained our city and guilds qualification along with many other internal and external qualifications, for example I have just passed my IPAF MEWP course.
The work is always changing and really gives you a wide range of skills to learn. the team I am with always wants you to gain knowledge and they are keen to help with that.
I can tell even as an apprentice that I am a respected and valued member of the team. If we do something well or we complete a job early we can be rewarded whether this is by financial such as appreciate points or going out on a company meal as a team like we do each Christmas.
The programme is planned over a year and includes all aspects of our training from when we very first started with the inductions up to know. I was given support by my mentor when I struggled on my math's which was very helpful
The vast majority of people are always willing to help and want you to do well in your apprenticeship and I feel that I have appreciated the support which has been offered to me
The manager is always there to talk to and willing to help with any problems or questions,
Very well.
There have been a few but because of the courses we need to attend at Eakring we often can't go on these events such as the annual sailing
