My job role is maintaining the transmission towers for National Grid. The job varies with lots of different tasks ranging from changing insulators, spacers on the lines, replacing tower fittings and patrolling.
I have learnt lots of new skills whilst on this apprenticeship. Due to some jobs being technical I have had to learn how to understand technical drawings and follow them to complete a task.
I have enjoyed my time on this programme. The variety of the jobs, the team work and gaining new qualifications have kept me motivated. The only negative is the amount of time away from home.
I feel highly valued by National Grid. They have invested a lot of time and money into me during this apprenticeship and my progress is closely monitored by my manager and others higher up in the company.
I think the programme is pretty well structured at the moment as when back on site I can easily put new skills to use. It could be organised better for us to get the best use of time when back on site as I have missed some big jobs that would have given me good experience.
I feel the support is always there if required from the trainers who I know I can turn too for help or if they can't help I am steered in the right direction by them. Support is also given by the rest of the gang who I work with.
I receive a good level of support from National Grid, I have had personal problems at work and I have they have been flexible to allow me to go home and resolve the problem. If I have any issues I have no problem bringing them up in meetings.
The salary is only just meeting my costs now as I own a house so the first couple of years where a squeeze but I have been able to get by mainly from being lodged away during the apprenticeship.
There are lots of opportunities in National Grid but I feel most of the volunteer work is focused away from where I live/work. This would require more time away from home and my family.
Yes
I would recommend my job to my friends as it is very challenging, different and enjoyable. The benefits I receive are also a massive bonus and I feel valued being part of National Grid.
Have an understanding of health and safety as it is a very important part of my day to job and have a head for hights if you're wanting to work on the towers.
