  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Laboratory Operations Technician. Carrying out engine tests on Dynamometers for research and development of new turbo components. I am in control of my own test bed and it is my responsibility to look after it and keep everything in good condition. I will receive a work request and that gives me all the information i need to carry out a task. It includes the engine i will be using, the test turbo, running points for the engine, what needs recording, how long the test is etc etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout the apprenticeship i have achieved many qualifications in engineering and be given the opportunity to go on many training courses to learn new skills. The company will allow me to go onto further education to do my degree, masters and PHD if i want to further my knowledge even more. I have learned a lot of new skills, such as machining, welding, engineering and also life skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The area i work in is the best part of the job, i work with a group of good lads that i get on well with. We can have a laugh when the time is right but get down to business as well. There is plenty of culture and different personalities at work which brings diversity.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Cummins?
  • I feel very valued especially by my manager. He recognizes good work and gives credit where its due. When I'm working on larger projects everyone in the team makes sure that you feel involved and that you're useful asset to the project.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From start to finish the programme has been very well organised from the inductions on the first day, through the training at college, the support when things got tough, studying, to end when i got settled in my job.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The training provider was very supportive and there was plenty of guidance and resources available for if i struggles. The tutors were always willing to stay that little bit longer to go over something again if someone didn't quite get it.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer was extremely supportive, they'd allow me time inside of working hours to do some studying. If i was struggling they would help me through it giving me support whether it was bringing someone external onsite or having someone onsite help me out.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The par meets all my costs and its something i can't complain about.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • My employer is extremely good for sorting out activities/holidays outside of work at a discount price. There is also local events and clubs which get supported.

  • 9. Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Because from day one i have been treat like a highly valued asset to them. They have supported me from start to finish, teaching me new skills along they way. I have met a lot of new people and work with bunch of good people. The hours are excellent and the pay tops it all off.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
  • If you're applying just be yourself and make sure you they remember you. Its an apprenticeship that's worth working for.
