I am part of the engineering maintenance team where we perform preventative and reactive maintenance on all measurement and control (instrumentation) equipment and systems. As well as this I also attend college once a week working towards an HNC qualification.
I have developed my hand, teamwork, communication and qualifications as well as learning about the measurement and control systems on the site.
I swap between 2 plants on site and therefore also between 2 teams. I have enjoyed working with both teams as they are friendly and eager to further my learning. I am constantly challenged and by the work and questions assigned to me and the whole programme has exceeded my expectations.
I am given informal feedback regularly from my manager, whether that be praise or constructive criticism. There are lunch vouchers and money vouchers up for grab throughout the year for recognition for exceptional work which helps encourage staff to maintain high quality work and boosts morale.
Very well structured. As a new member on site, we receive an induction and regular training on new or unfamiliar equipment/programmes/tasks. We have mentors in place for support and are given 1 day every 2 weeks to study for our internal assessors. Tasks are delegated by the manager however, if we show interest and justification in a particular job, the manager will move job assignments around to accommodate this.
The tradesmen are our training providers and give constant support, access to educational sources as well as advice. Generally we are placed to one tradesman each to enable a deeper bond and trust whilst learning but we do work with all in the team.
My manager is very supportive, approachable and amiable. I am able to go to him with any issues or questions that I would prefer are kept discreet. My mentor is always available when I have questions and keeps me up to date with upcoming projects.
The salary is better than some other companies however, it is still difficult balance the input and output and is not as competitive with other companies in the industry as it once was. Although the salary is low, the travel expenses are paid for the day we go to college.
As part of the apprenticeship programme we are sent to an annual week long networking and skills development week where we meet all of the other apprentices from other UK sites in the same year. There is also 1 day a year where we donate our working day to charity work.
Yes
I have enjoyed my time here so far and really enjoy the teams I have been working in. There is a great support network and a place where you can meet so many amazing and diverse people.
Ensure that you are as prepared as possible for the interview, do your research and above all show off who you are and that you have a good attitude! The assessment day is competitive and tiring but well worth it if you put the work in.
