My role a 'laboratory science apprentice' and I work within a medicinal and organic chemistry lab called protein degradation. On a day to day basis I help to carry out various large and small scale reactions to help progress my departments on going projects.
I have developed my presentation skills and I am now a lot more confident presenting to people. I have also learnt a lot of practical skills which I use in the lab everyday, I have to be aware of various hazards and risks and use equipment correctly in order to be safe.
The work that I do at GSK is always interesting and exciting and this is why I enjoy it so much, there is always new stuff to learn. The team I work with are brilliant and are very supportive and easy to get along with. The company itself is also great, there are lots of additional benefits which we receive and lots of extra courses and training which we have the opportunity to go on. This programme exceeded my expectations, not many people can say they got their degree for free whilst earing a competitive salary and essential skills. I am thoroughly enjoying it.
I feel extremely valued by GSK. Despite being an apprentice at them bottom of the hierarchy, I am treated the same as anyone else in the company and am given the same responsibilities and opportunities, (such as meeting the CEO!!)
This programme is very well structured and organised, however the only slight let down is that the university course isn't specifically tailored to each chemistry apprentices needs, however this would be difficult to do.
From my training provider which is MMU, we do receive support whenever we need it an emails are responded to very quickly or we can alternatively call them. However the guidance which is given to us on assigned tasks isn't very specific.
I receive a great amount of support from my employer. I have a mentor and manager which I can go to for any questions, I also have frequent chemistry tutorials run by the graduates here at GSK to expand my knowledge of chemistry and help me to get a head start on uni work.
The salary is great for me personally and covers my costs. However for some people who have to relocate this salary can be very tight on their living costs as it is expensive in the south east of England.
GSK have paid for us apprentices to go on a development week in the lake district where we did lots of fun outdoor activities. I also take part in lots of careers fairs and visit lots of schools to help promote apprenticeships. I have also recently entered the brathay apprentice challenge along with 8 other apprentices in my team where we have organised lots of fundraising events and helped out a local carers community who need more funding.
Yes
Its an all round great company with lots of opportunities and benefits.
Be yourself and don't try to be something you think they are looking for. GSK don't look for the 'perfect' candidate, they look for someone who has great personality and can grow and develop in the company.
