I'm a full time waitress. I also do bar work. I serve customers everyday by taking orders, clearing tables, serving food and drink and taking payments. I also make coffees and tea.
I recently completed a level 2 food and beverage apprenticeship course. It gave me more confidence in my role, but I also learned more on health and safety e.g to always make sure the milk wand is cleaned after use as it could lead to salmonella building up on the wand.
I enjoyed the programme, even though it was challenging at times - especially when I had to try and fit in homework and working long hours. Overall, it was easier than I thought it would be as most of it was going through stuff I already know - my job.
I'm very involved with tasks within my work place, which helps me feel appreciated. I sometimes feel like I'm not valued however. As if I'm just there to make them money. And of course that is one of the reasons I have a job but making me feel as if I'm a valuable member of staff instead of making me feel like I'm replaceable would be nice.
Training and support were good throughout the course. Anytime I needed help with a certain part, my trainer was always an e-mail or phone call away. If I really struggled on a part of the course, we would push that aside and work on that later so I could complete the stuff I did know.
I received as much support as I needed. Any time I asked for help, my trainer would try and help me work it out instead of point blank telling me the answer, which I found helped me more in the end. My trainer was always happy to help.
My employer allowed me to take some time through my shifts to sit down with my trainer so we could continue with the course. I asked my manager a few questions here and there and she was happy to answer them.
I manage to get by on my wage, but find it unfair that I'm on minimum wage just because of my age. I do the same work as others who get paid more than me. I sometimes do more hours than them and they still get paid more because they are older. It seems silly. I have as much to pay for at home than they do. Travel costs can be high. I stay 20 miles away (aprox.) so that's 40 miles per working day, making that 200 miles per week I need to travel.
Opportunities related to work - no. But there are opportunities to do other things like attend the gym etc around the area. When I'm not working I like to take time to myself like socialising and going to the gym.
Yes
Overall, it's a good company to work for. Alright pay, and good staff discounts. Not to mention good food.
That if you're willing to work hard for your money, then definitely apply. Interviews are pretty easy, same with application process.
