My job title is Formulation Scientist. My daily tasks involve developing and testing computer systems that help to formulate ice creams. I am responsible to ensure that the calculations from the new system match the old system, and then build further to make a better system.
I have a foundation qualification in Food Science and Technology. I also attend the courses run by Unilever to ensure I am a safe worker, courses I have attended include: manual handling, risk assessment, chefmanship, food safety level 2 among others. I have also developed all of my personal and professional skills here.
I love the work that I do as it is really relevant and important. I am respected in the workplace and never seen as 'an apprentice' just one of the team. I love the diversity of people and cultures. The location is idyllic and beautiful.
I feel extremely valued. My manager really respects me and looks after me, she also helps to develop me into a better employee. There are lots of awards ceremonies and ways to get recognised for good work which helps motivate me.
The induction was wonderful and gave a good insight into working life right from GO. There is a lot of support given with studying and training. The organisation is quite flexible, which suits Unilever, as people can have more choice in their future.
My tutor is wonderful and I would not have done so well without her. They are always ready to answer questions and watch you learn. There is so much guidance and support, which comforts you near deadlines.
The amount of support offered is tremendous. My manager allows me a study day before my exams as well as spare time in the day, once my jobs are complete, to do University work. Everyone offers guidance and so you are never short of a helping hand.
Perfectly. I have recently brought my own home and a car and still manager to have money spare to save. It is just the right amount. I cycle to and from work and so travel costs are minimal, but even with a car it would be perfect.
The opportunities in and outside of work are endless and everyone will know someone who can give you a nudge in the right direction. There are company events, as well as an onsite gym, shop, theatre and music clubs.
Yes
Unilever is a wonderful company to work for. They care about everyone the environment and the economy. Unilever gave me a chance and I am so grateful.
Be yourself. Always say 'thank you for your time' as people are not paid to interview you and so they are volunteering time for you. I would have loved to be told that you should always ask a question when they offer you the chance, as it makes you seem interested, which is a great start.
