Research Chemist working in different areas of R&D including Laundry and Hair Care. Responsible for developing formulations and new technologies at a bench scale including testing the prototypes in terms of performance.
Developed scientific expertise, communication & presentation, organisation, teamwork, creative thinking skills and established an excellendt work-university balance. Gained a HNC and BSc (Hons) degree in Chemistry.
Work was interesting and enjoyable, as I was given the chance to work on real projects with experienced professionals. Company culture is fantastic with everyone being approachable to help with work challenges or university. The apprenticeship exceeded my expectations in terms of the experience I gained, the people I met and the qualifications I gained. I know that I achieved higher grades due to the motivation/guidance from the people I work with.
All managers hand out real responsibility and all work was praised. Necessary guidance was given by mentors/line managers to help develop essential skills. Managers, directors and even the CEO are extremely interested in Unilever apprentices and are always involved in promotional events to push apprenticeships.
Very well organised. First year HNC in Chemistry to bring us up to speed with year 1 Chemists in University. Remaining 3 years part time at University whilst working during the free periods. Excellent balance of work and study with sufficient time allocated to develop both skills/qualifications.
University tutor approachable and regular meetings were held to ensure the Unilever students in particular with coping with the work/study balance.
Mentor within every department. Regular 1:1's to ensure targets were met and certain skills were being developed. Always encouraged to challenge oneself which has stood me in good sted today.
Excellent salary package way above the lowest wage. Unilever provided us with a railcard for discounted rail travel to and from university. Location excellent, accessible from Wirral area and easily from Liverpool/Wales. Daily costs OK as food/drink is subsidized to low prices.
Plenty of team building events that occur in different departments 1/2 times a year. Events are usually external and allowed the chance to come together as a team. Apprentice events held regularly to strengthen community feel between apprentices. Brathay Challenge involvement each year allows apprentices to volunteer and work towards a community project aimed to help local charities out. Lots of social activities outside of work including sports clubs, gym and general team nights out.
Yes
Excellent experience, training, qualifications gained and salary. Chance to work alongside experienced professionals and develop essential skills ready for graduation. Unilever has many moral initiatives which I support including a well established USLP aiming to improve lives of consumers. The brands Unilever develop all have a purpose and its great to work for such a rewarding company.
Show your interest in the company and the area which you plan to study/work in. Try and get some work experience in the relevant area to make you stand out from the crowd.
