I am currently training to be a systems engineer. My daily tasks include setting to work systems; troubleshooting problems; making recommendations and rectifying problems; and general maintenance of systems. On a daily basis I work closely with a team of individuals within the department as well as working closely with the end user. The projects that I have been included in so far have revolved around the 4.5 gun, 30mm gun and torpedo system.
Throughout my apprenticeship I have had the opportunity to work towards, and complete, academic qualifications including NVQ level 3, HNC and HND. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to begin studying my BEng (Hons). As well as my formal academic qualification I am currently enhancing my theoretical knowledge of engineering systems with my on the job training.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship. The unique work that I have been involved with so far has been interesting however the main selling point is the people which I have met over the years and had the opportunity to work with; they have been inclusive and willing to help. The culture of our unique workplace can be difficult at times however I strongly believe that individuals are interested in changing for the better. The apprenticeship has supposed all my expectations and I am grateful that I have had this opportunity.
From my experiences so far, I feel as though BAE Systems and all the individuals it encompasses do value there staff and apprentices. The opportunities I have been given have been excellent and has added to both my professional and personal development. Throughout my placements on my apprenticeship I have been given responsibility for tasks and projects which go onto have real impact in our workplace/company. Delivering in these projects give real life experiences and makes you feel as though your contribution is worth while.
I have known of experiences where my colleagues have had difficulties with regards to the structure and organisation of the programme with respect to placement rotations and further education. At times I have had similar experiences however, I do believe that some self initiative is required which could help avoid these problems.
With regards to some of our formal education, there has been some hurdles in the early stages where assessor have changed over and verifiers have required different methods for assessing work. Overall, I believe that these initial teething problems have been rectified for later year groups. I have never felt uncomfortable or that I cannot ask for help as there has always been support from all tiers of the organisation. I do enjoy the training which I have received and believe it to be crucial for setting the foundations for my career.
Throughout my apprenticeship I have always felt as though the majority which I have encountered, whether that be managers, piers, HR and mentors, have always been supportive and encouraging me to pursue what I want and succeed.
Whether it is true or not, I have heard from others how other companies pay more to their apprentices. However, I am 21, I have a newish car paid for, I am in the process of buying my own flat and I would say that I have sufficient funds to have a good social life. In addition, I am currently doing my bachelors degree with the prospect of doing a masters degree, fully sponsored, so it is an understatement to say that my salary meets my costs. That being said, if they want to pay me more I won't knock it ;-)
Throughout our apprenticeship I have been involved with extra curricular and STEM activities which are associated with the company however are outside of the typical working environment. I believe that these opportunities are equally as important than the formal training we receive as they aid our professional and personal skills.
Yes
I would recommend BAE Systems for the opportunities which they have provided me. Prior to joining the company, I was not enthusiastic towards work and further education; now I am driven to achieve the best which I can and I believe that BAE Systems have developed me to be this way. As well as that, there are potential opportunities to work in a variety of areas and in different countries.
Although some technical skills are required, you are on an apprenticeship to learn so I would recommend that the best thing to do is to show that you are keen to learn and have the enthusiasm to learn. If an individual is unsure, I would also recommend doing voluntary work experience to get a feel for the work and business.
