As an Areaspace Software Engineering Apprentice, I have worked within various teams around the company, within various stages of the Software Development Life Cycle.
Throughout the course so far I have learn a lot about software testing, an area of the SDLC which I hadn't had any experience in before. In addition to this, I have learn how to better communicate with co-workers.
I have enjoyed the programme very much; it is based in an office with brilliant, like-minded people who all enjoy what they do. The company has also taken time to send apprentices off for inductions at the bigger sites, and a team building week.
From day one, BAE Systems has had us working on real products for real customers. After gaining some experience, you really begin to feel like a needed and valued member of the team, as you help out other employees.
The programme is structured fairly well, though there has been a hicup with the degree provider, meaning one year of the course will have to go away to unversity, instead of staying locally.
The training prodviders have been very supportive with ensuring we have enough time to complete both our college work and our NVQ. The company's staff are very quick to provide support, though the degree provider isn't.
All employees are very approachable, and from day one you are reminded that there is no such thing as a stupid question. They encourage you ask others about the projects you're working on so you can further develop your knowledge.
The salary provided is very good, with enough to cover living costs, travel costs, day-to-day spending and still have money left over for social events. This is one of the best paid apprenticeships I've seen.
There are many oppurtunities outside of work, with the local site commitee arranging social events for the entire office, and individual projects arranging smaller events for members of the team.
Yes
BAE Systems is a great company to work for with brilliant benefits. The people you get to work with are amazing and are always keen to help you learn. Everyone treats you as a normal employee, even when you have lots of College Work and NVQ work to complete. Overall, BAE Systems is a very good and supportive company to work for.
Just be yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions. There is no such thing as a stupid question, other than those which don't get asked. All employees are more than happy to assist apprentices, and are very understanding that we are here to learn.
