I complete work as part of a team on a project. The exact task varies depending on the project but is typically involved with software development cycle.
I have developed skills in object-oriented programming using Java. I have also been able to develop my communication skills on previous projects, and my NVQ and degree course has helped me to develop my organisational and time management skills.
I have enjoyed planning, designing and programming an application from scratch whilst learning how to use an object-oriented language and learning about what considerations need to be made to develop an effective interface.
A large amount of help and support is available to apprentices, and progress and personal development is regularly assessed. I feel that BAE systems makes a significant investment into their apprentices and fully supports their development.
I have moved to a new project recently and have not been placed into one of the teams yet, but from what I've seen there is good organisation. The project uses agile to organise sprint teams which have deadlines to complete work by.
We are given support to help with assignments, and in most cases we are given the necessary guidance to complete assignments to a good standard. In a few specific cases, guidance has been lacking or even misleading, though these problems are being worked on and have improved significantly.
BAE systems provides a range of support to apprentices. They will listen to any queries and will make arrangements with other parts of the business or with the college to ensure we have everything we need to be successful in out apprenticeships.
The salary is more than sufficient to meet all of my costs. I have no problem paying for living, travel and social/recreational activities on a daily basis.
We are regularly given the opportunity to assist with company events and activities such as recruitment fairs and engineering-related activities with students. I have also assisted with company business to client sites.
Yes
BAE Systems is a great opportunity to develop important skills in the field of software engineering whilst completing a degree. Apprentices are involved with a variety of projects to develop a wide range of skills whilst working to deadlines as part of a team, as well as opportunities to help with events outside of work. The support available is excellent, personal development is encouraged and apprentices are valued by the company.
You need to be enthusiastic about the apprenticeship, keen to develop your skills and career and eager to make the most of opportunities that you are given. One detail we were unaware of is that, if accepted, you need to apply via UCAS for the college course.
