My job is as an aerospace software developer. There are a variety of positions that you get to try throughout the apprenticeship from testing, programming, documentation, etc. you get treated as part of the team on each 6 month placement.
Throughout the apprenticeship you are working towards a degree and a level 4 NVQ. There are also other great opportunities such as helping out at career events, school events and other activities. Learning is happening every da on the job as well as at college; other staff are approachable and used to helping apprentices.
The programme its self is a challenge; it's vital to balance time effectively - but this is a great learning experience that applies to everyday life! Everyone I've worked with so far has been accepting and kind. There are also out of work events to get to know your peers more.
As an apprentice I feel that most managers are appreciative of apprentices and are willing to help with training. I've always felt involved in my project and that my work is valued.
The first two years of the apprenticeship has been well planned, this gains you a foundation degree. However the last two years are not well planned yet and are un clear. The NVQ is well planned and managed
I feel that support with the NVQ is very good. The advisor is well informed, friendly and has a wide range of understanding. The college we attend is OK in general and has improved with some feedback.
There is a large amount of support from BAE Systems. The company is very supportive of it's apprentices and puts time into making sure we're achieving and getting along ok with work. Managers and other team members on project are very supportive and understanding of apprentices.
Our salary is fair and travels any costs that we may incur - living, travel, social and general costs. The salary compares much better to other local apprenticeships.
There are a few work events and air shows that are available to us as apprentices. There has been a social event for the building and are many career and air shows that we may attend - but these tend to be fairly far to travel. The local community in the area has lots of activities and opportunities to get involved with.
Yes
I would recommend this apprenticeships to anyone who thinks that university may not be their best option. You gain a degree and get to work at the same time, this is the perfect way to perfect your time keeping skills and gain tons of work experience in the process.
I would advise people to be honest in their application and not be afraid to stand out. Emphasise any experiences you've had that improve you skills. Tailor your application to the company and do lots of research.
