I am currently on the higher apprenticeship with BAE Systems at Portsmouth Naval Base, currently completing a HNC in mechanical and electrical engineering. Once completed, I will move into working at the Naval Base, undertaking a series of work based placements across the base.
I have learnt multiple new skills, mainly focused around technical engineering information. My self confidence has massively increased, and this allows for my presentation skills to increase. Overall, I will leave this apprenticeship with a HNC and possibly a HND in mechanical and electrical engineering.
I thoroughly enjoy the programme I am on; it is an enjoyable experience and I enjoy learning new things every single day. I look forward to new topics being covered to broaden my knowledge base.
I do feel very valued by the company; they have funded my training and qualifications, and still pay me a wage. Any problems which occur are dealt with appropriately, and management get involved which is always good to see.
The structure of the programme is well organised and has been thoroughly explained. The HNC year which I am currently in is structured by a college timetable, and is still flexible to allow for other studies or business purposes.
The support from the college we are doing our training is very good; the lecturers are very helpful and certain ones go out of their way to help. They ensure we have everything we need and are very approachable when help is needed.
Currently there is not much interaction with the employer as we are undertaking a college year, however we carry out 12 weekly reviews on our progress, and any problems can be dealt with through an email. They have a good attitude towards supporting our studies and helping any problems we have
The salary we are paid is very good; it is one of the highest I know of for a first year apprentice at this level. Although costs of living are expensive, the salary allows me to pay rent, run a car, save money and shop whenever I want.
We were give the opportunity to become STEM ambassadors, which I have done. This provides opportunities outside of work
Yes
Good place to work, good salary, paid to learn.
Give a good application and interview, first impressions go a long way.
