Software Development Apprentice. Testing Software, Writing and Developing Test Scripts. Responsibility to see individual work to Formal Testing Phase and to hand over work well to colleagues.
SQL and using SQL server management studio, web based coding, programming, database design, networking and . Learnt how to organise multiple distinct strings of work together as well as reorganising my personal life around work. How to build working relationships. We had an Outward Bounds course that taught us managerial and problem solving skills.
I enjoy the office environment, it is friendly and open. The people I work with are fun and have a good understanding of what is expected of me.
The put a lot of time into our growth as a rounded employee which I appreciate, I also like that we are seen as potential for the future rather than cheap work.
I think that the apprenticeship is not particularly well organised in parts because it is quite new, there is understanding of the general requirements of our programme but not to great detail or only detail in parts
My NVQ advisor is very good, supportive, understanding and gives us the work and a deadline. My college is not the best, but not bad and there's motivation within the college to improve.
I think that the employer takes a side seat in my apprenticeship, they understand all the aspects of my apprenticeship but are not actively involved. My work feels distinct from my apprentice, which I like because stress from one aspect doesn't seep into the other.
My salary exceeded my expectations and allows everyone in the apprenticeship to increase their salary through good performance. I do not have many costs because I live at home.
I like doing sport and there are communities inside and outside of work who are doing the same sports as I am. I like the local community it is a nice mix of country and city. Many of my hobbies are small projects I take up at home, but my main involvement outside of work is cycling.
Yes
I think too many people consider University as the first or only option for me, and I expect for others it as provided the ideal balance between work and University. I thought I would miss out socially but I think I have met more people through my apprenticeship (and people who'd I'll know for a long time). I am reassured for the future, without worries of debt or employment problems.
If your passions lie in sciences and you are slightly lost as to what to do or you have an interest in computers I would recommend BAE Systems to you, although there are many apprenticeships out there. BAE will support you personally so you need to be open when you come here, be open to learn and provide help. Study scientific subjects and do as well as you can, and try and show that motivation in your interview. They want to know you would enjoy it here and could be a valuable asset. Believe in yourself (because that's the place to start).
