I am currently on my first placement at BAE. My day to day role at the moment is a project control role on typhoon repairs. I work closely with a range of stakeholders to process repair orders, monitor budgets and sort out liability for the damages.
Yes, definitely! Through the uni side of the apprenticeship, I have developed a completely new skill set in project management that I did not have before, including stakeholder management and managing budgets. We also recently ran a project at uni in groups, which gave us the chance to fill 'real roles' such as project manager or risk assessor, which increased my confidence and communication skills. Whilst at work, BAE are very encouraging for you to attend training and courses that you want as long as they are not disruptive to your work.
I really enjoy my programme, the people I work with are all very supportive and helpful, but also a good laugh when its brew time! I enjoy the day I go to uni each week as this is when all the apprentices are together and it mixes up the week having a day out the office.
Right from the start, I have felt valued by BAE. Despite being in my first year of an apprenticeship, I am involved as much as any established member of staff. The opinions that you raise are taken seriously!
The structure is a little difficult to understand to begin with, but now it makes sense and is organised well. At uni, the lecturers always give plenty of time to complete assignments (as they know you are busy working) and they are super supportive and quick to respond to any emails asking for help. Within the first 3 years of the scheme your placement s are chosen for you, based on completing a list of mandatory competencies in order to pass the Higher Apprenticeship and continue onto the BSc.
The staff at uni are very supportive! Whether you want them to check over your work, or just have a query- they are all eager to help at any point!
Plenty of support is available at BAE, the scheme leaders are very easy going and make you feel comfortable. My manager is also very approachable. There are also plenty of other provisions in place, such as the employee assistance helpline 24/7 for any problems you may want to share confidentially in order to receive help and guidance.
The salary is very good for an apprenticeship. Since starting at BAE last year, we have also received an increase in the salary and 2 bonus sums. The salary covers my costs- rent, bills, fuel and spending money!
There are endless opportunities to get involved with BAE outside of work- sports teams, choir, STEM ambassador, charity work, staff meals. We are going on a trip to an RAF base soon!
Yes
It is a good set up- the job is enjoyable, good salary, no student debt for the degree and when you graduate you have 5 years work experience. There are also other benefits, such as the health care scheme and a good pension fund.
Make sure you research as much as you can about what BAE are looking for in the application and at the interview stage. Be prepared, be confident and be yourself.
