I am currently a machining apprentice at BAE Systems, I am in the 2nd year of my apprenticeship. I move around the business doing different 18 week placements in various machining facilities.
I came to my apprenticeship straight from school so I have learnt a lot of new skills and also developed others. For instance I have not done much engineering before coming to BAE so I have learned new skills in fitting, electrical and machining. I have also developed my social skills and improved my confidence.
I enjoy working as a machinist, but also I enjoy the extra curricular activities that BAE have to offer. For instance, I am currently doing German lessons to prepare me for my German Exchange in August.
I feel very valued here, as I have had a medical issue that has prevented me from some manual work, however BAE have been able to help me by putting me on a light duties placement until I have recovered.
I have a folder which contains an overview of my apprenticeship programme so that I know where I am currently at and what my different jobs are working towards.
I have an assessor who is available to help me if I have any issues what so ever. We have monthly meetings to discuss my placement and NVQ work.
From the placements that I have currently been in, I know that if I had any issues that needed addressing I would be able to speak to my supervisor and he would be able to help me or point me in the right direction.
The salary that I am on currently is enough to cover the costs of my car, fuel, and social costs. I still live with my parents so I have no financial issues, however I would probably struggle with this amount if I lived alone.
I am a STEM Ambassador so I have the opportunity to do work with younger people, teaching them about STEM skills. I am on the German Exchange also, so I will be going to Germany in August. In the past I have gone to events such as Manufacturing awards to, as during the first year of my apprenticeship I had made a centre piece for one of the tables at the event.
Yes
I believe it has gave me a great start to life from leaving school. I am doing my further education while doing on the job training and I have been given many opportunities to develop myself as a person through the apprenticeship.
I think that any one applying, should be aware of their best attributes so that they can showcase these in their application and interviews.
