My role consists of IT support: producing various spreadsheets, applications etc. in order to support the business needs; Data sentencing of files; supporting engineering staff as local IT contact providing assistance with hardware, software and general IT infrastructure. There are also a variety of upcoming projects such as standardisation of IT filing structures on the network.
I have developed a variety of skills through the various roles and projects that I have been associated with. Some of the most notable skills which have been developed are problem solving, time management, Excel spreadsheet skills (INDEX + MATCH and Dynamic Named Ranges) and coding in VBA (e.g. automating tasks for the user). Automatic production of reports is now achieved by the use of INDEX + MATCH and VBA.
For the first year of my apprenticeship I was based on a smaller site with many activities involving site administration including contractor management, facilities management and general admin. In the second year of my apprenticeship I have moved into the IM&T function which has given me more opportunity to grow in the field of IT and provided me with a much better understanding of the business requirements supported by the IM&T function. I have thoroughly enjoyed both elements but prefer the latter which will allow for me to develop further.
BAE Systems continually attempt to develop early careers and encourage apprentices to experience a diverse range of activities. A recognition and rewards scheme is employed by the company and I have received several rewards in the form of vouchers and free meals. The company also employ a Chairman's Award scheme to recognise a number of categories including innovation. I have been nominated for a Chairman's Award.
BAE Systems has allowed me time in order to complete the necessary studying and assessments required by my training provider. BAE Systems also has a variety of resources available in association to training and support. Regular reviews are held with my line manager and training provider assessor to ensure that all tasks were completed in a timely manner with the correct evidence submitted.
I have received a lot of support from my training provider when it was required and this has allowed for me to complete work in a timely manner to a high standard such as by having access to guidance documents.
My line manager has provided me with a lot of support and guidance to allow for me to conduct my role and development efficiently. Both my line managers and other have been available and are more than happy to help and guide me.
I believe that the salary and package provided by BAE Systems is much improved on the national average and this shows the early careers is extremely valued in BAE Systems.
There are a large variety of opportunities outside of work such as leisure/sports activities in which I participate. Also there are regular social activities such as planned meals etc.
Yes
I would recommend BAE Systems to a friend as it is a good company to work for and they are well focused on early careers with good prospects for the future.
The application process is simple and online, with the interviews being competency based including assessment activities that relate to the job role. Being a forward looking company, there are plenty of future career opportunities.
