My role as an electrical maintenance technician involves me carrying out preventative maintenance on an array of electrical plant and equipment such as motors, switchboards and transformers etc. to ensure equipment is fit for purpose and identify any potential failures before they occur.
I have learnt all my electrical knowledge and skill on this apprenticeship as before this I had no experience with tools or electrical equipment. I've also learnt some mechanical skill as well as control and instrumentation skill such as soldering from different courses throughout my apprenticeship.
I've really enjoyed the programme not only for the skills i've learnt but also the extra benefits it offers such as the trips abroad and being able to move away from home for 2 years and gain independance and life skills. The company have exceeded my expectations throughout this apprenticeship through their generosity for their apprentices and genuine care for their development and futures.
I feel valued by the company as an apprentice as the skills I've learnt have allowed me to already be trusted to carry out certain jobs on my own with this being recognised by my line manager.
The initial 2 years residential are organised and structured to meet our qualification requirements with the following 2 years on site also loosely structured to finishing our qualification. However this is left more to our organisation to complete with nominated NVQ assessors to each apprentice to ensure we are kept on track and complete.
We have technicians with us daily teaching us the jobs we carry out while we also have dedicated training sessions for the apprentices when we first arrive on site to ensure we have common knowledge before we begin the work at hand.
Support is always readily available if we require it in the form of our line manager, apprentice coordinator or training instructors who are all approachable and willing to help.
My salary package meets my costs comfortably however I am not a home owner yet.
In the first 2 years there were many opportunities outside of work made available to us such as the trips abroad, social events and local competitions that we were all encouraged to take part in. since returning to site there have been fewer opportunities, only our team social events and some station social events for milestone celebrations.
