  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is Export Control Business Apprentice and I am involved in maintaining Export Control compliance across the business. This includes training, licences, U.S. and UK Export.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot so far within my apprenticeship. Not only am I gaining a level 3 business admin qualification, I am learning challenging and real life experiences and how to handle such protected and controlled information. It also allows me to network with other people, going to various sites and different training courses and I speak to a range of people each day.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the vast majority of my scheme. I like the work and the variety it brings and my team are great. It is definitely a lot of work but I enjoy the busy nature of it.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I feel like I have some relevance to the company even though I am still pretty much at the beginning of my scheme and I feel that I get acknowledged when I do some good work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think my scheme could have been organised a bit better as my college assessor didn't know I actually started at the company so that was a hassle but otherwise everything else is fine. It hasn't delayed me in terms of completing my college work and I am well ahead in terms of my progress.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I think I receive a good amount of support. I feel guided on what I need to do to achieve the full marks.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I think I get a lot of support in terms of work and social balance.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • At the moment, my pay gets me by but it involves me including a lot of saving for social life, buying petrol and food, saving for a mortgage etc.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I get to attend a lot of various training courses and visit other sites. I get to take part in various challenges set for early careers.

  • Yes

  • Because it is a job which provides variety, expands networking and develops already had skills and new ones.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • ensure you research the company and understand the role you are applying for and explain to them why you want that role.
