I am a 2nd year apprentice fitter, my day-to-day role is to integrate with the workers on my section and complete tasks that they set me such as drilling, riveting and general assembly work. My main interactions are with co-workers and sometimes visitors.
I have learnt a lot of new hand skills whilst on my apprenticeship, most of it starting in the 1st year in the training school but you develop it so much more when you come out on site as your confidence grows and get more use to doing things.m
I would recommend the programme to anyone as i have enjoyed it a lot. Learning new skills and having such a hands-on approach.
I feel very valued, as BAE invest a lot of time and money into apprentices, i feel that we are the future and people appreciate us.
The programme is well organised, the structure is based on a minimum of 3 years, 1 year in the training school whilst you learn skills and choose your specialisation and the 2 years on site furthering developing skills and learning new ones.
Any question you ask is answered, if not everyone will go out of their way to help you to ensure that you get the answer you want. We can ask people face to face, phone someone, email.. the options of support are all available.

As an older apprentice, i did not join straight from school, I had a job prior to joining BAE so the money that I was earning was a lot more, so taking a pay cut was hard at first. But in the long run i have learnt to live with the wage (everyone always wants more money, you just learn to spend what you have). If i had never had a wage previous to this, the salary would be suitable.
There are many opportunities out of work, there are sporting activities, company open days, school events, team building activities.
Yes
It is a brilliant company to work for with many benefits. The skills that you can learn from just being a part of this company for a year are vast, the opportunities that are available are endless, I am taking part in a German Exchange programme this year which has been running for more than 15 years.
Make sure you are prepared. Do you homework, know everything about the company even if it has nothing to do with the industry that you are going into, it shows that you have a general interest and that you are willing to go that extra mile to be better. Practice interviews at home, with friends, family. When completing the application form, make sure you fill all the boxes, use all the character count that is available, show that you are committed to completing it (its probably the hardest part).
