I am learning to become a Power and Cooling Maintenance Engineer working in telephone exchanges. We deal mostly with routine maintenance, but also occasional faults and installing/repairing new kit.
I've almost completed a Level 3 NVQ and BTEC Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The vast majority of the engineering tasks are new to me.
BT is an excellent organisation to work for. The continuing investment and opportunities means you can have a varied career and are trained to a very high level.
BT invests a lot of money in all its employees. I have attended numerous external courses picking up industry qualifications along the way.
The three year programme is very well structured. The NVQ has percentage milestones, the BTEC progress is managed by the College and you are informed what courses to complete each year.
You have a couple of lecturers at college, they ensure you keep on track and teach you everything you need to know to pass the BTEC diploma.
Each apprentice has a line manager, a buddy, a coach and an assessor. All of these people are determined to support you throughout your apprenticeship and make sure you succeed.
This apprenticeship is paid far in excess of the minimum apprentice wage and benefits from a substantial pay rise every year your progress through the framework.
There are a range of clubs, societies and charity opportunities all employees are encouraged to get involved with. You can even get paid time off to support the local community or do something for charity.
Yes
The overall package and room for progression makes this a very attractive opportunity, especially as an entry level role into the business.
Research the role and prepare well for the assessment centre. BT are looking for potential, if you are able to demonstrate a willingness to learn and a positive attitude you will go far.
