I am working within a voice test role at BT, which involves analysis of calls to detect faults and skills and knowledge to fix/organise fixes on those faults.
I have learnt much more technical skills as I am not from a technical background, and I've learnt a lot of engineering skills. I have also picked up communication skills and negotiating skills.
I think the programme is extremely good. Although it leaves a little to be desired on the organisational side I think that compared to a lot of other companies it is extremely well run and offers great skills and a good start to my career.
I feel that BT TSO values me, but HR leaves a little to be desired. I think BT has the best of intentions towards apprenticeships, but sometimes (understandably) operational needs get in the way of apprenticeship development.
I think the programme is very well structured and benefits from years of apprentices before me. New changes take a while to come through, but again compared to a lot of other programmes I think BT is very good.
I have a apprenticeship coach who is always available and extremely happy to help with any questions I have. She is usually the first point of contact, however there are multiple teams set up to support me that I can go to.
My line manager is very good at supporting me, as are the managers above him. They are eager to get the best out of me and offer me challenging opportunities that I am keen to undertake.
I had to initially take a pay cut in order to do the apprenticeship, and the first year was very difficult. As the pay progression has risen it has been easier and the final salary once I have finished my apprenticeship makes it worth it.
I have many opportunities outside of work, both to volunteer for BT and the apprentice programme and to attend apprentice events. There are also clubs and societies within BT that I can join.
Yes
Overall I feel that BT has a good programme that is a fantastic way to start your career. It is the best way to gain a degree, and makes a lot more sense as a first career step than university with no real world experience.
Be yourself and show that you are willing to learn. What you know isn't as important as your attitude and your potential, so really show that off in the application stages.
