  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice i am assigned to a specific area such as network or software, i am a software apprentice so the area of the company i work in is software based. day to day i attend meetings/calls and depending on which rotation i am in i could be running a project or coding for another project.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've definitely learnt new skills and developed my other skills too, especially communication skills when I've been working as a TDM. I need to be clear and to make sure the members of the team know 100% what i need from them and what they are required to complete to get the project delivered.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy UNI even though at the time it can be stressful i like challenging myself and trying new things, especially where i can apply myself and at the end get a result which will hopefully reflect the work i have put into it.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT Group?
  • Apprentices make up a big portion of BT and it makes it a fun, young and innovative place to work. My views may not be as 'seen' or 'understood' as someone whos been with the company for 40+ years and are higher up the ladder but everyone here is supportive and happy to give you a pedestal if you've got something really worth while to say/do.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • NVQ and UNI are structured well, having my time split between working and the apprenticeship elements is good. Although sometimes operationally you are made to feel guilty for being out 2 days a week. other than that the uni course would use refining to work people do as it doesn't always meet operational tasks.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • we have regular catchups with apprentice coaches who BT Hire to help us along the way. These are usually meetings with our managers and apprentice coach so performance across operational work and apprenticeship work can be seen.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • we have regular 121's with our line managers to help us along the way. These are usually meetings which happen every week or once a fortnight but its always nice to touch base and pick up on targets/what is expected of me from BT.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The wage is a good one for an apprenticeship, however recently theres been fuss over payrises and grades we will assimilate too once our apprenticeship has finished. It is all very unclear at the moment and doesnt enable me to make a positive comment for this question.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • a few, a lot of voulenteering takes place and everyone is supportive with events such as charity fundraising and helping people who need it. As an apprentice there is an apprentice and grad community- however trips are usually a lot of money!

  • 9. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Its a good place to work, once your in your in type thing. Also there are good benefits, its a big company to move around and your guarenteed to learn/travel and meet new people.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Just go for it! i wasnt sure and the roles wernt too clear on applying but the option to move round after the apprenticeship are huge so even if your not keen on the apprenticeship role your in there are opportunities after youve got your degree and 3 years of work experience.
