  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the mobile apps team, we develop these applications across all device types (iOS, Android, Windows Phone) and day-to-day we are writing code or testing these apps.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yeah, I've done a few training courses within BT, but also just being with other people who are really proficient at programming really helps learn new things all the time. University is also constantly teaching me as that progresses too.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my job and I love going to university, the people around me are great and the work is challenging. It has absolutely surpassed my expectations and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT Group?
  • I feel very valuable to the process at BT, some of my work has actually gone into live systems that BT manage and customers can see, which is a lot of responsibility for an apprentice. My manager is also fantastic and a lot of other people have given me reward cards because of my hard work and effort.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • To be honest, not very. The induction week was a really good way to get us to intermingle with the other apprentices, make some new friends etc. However, the days where we were just told things in 'conferences' were extremely boring and i don't know how useful. The work side of things is very organised, but the apprentice side of things not so. For example we started uni in February and got stuck straight in with uni level maths, which was fine for me, but some people had not done maths for years, therefore i think an improvement would be between the october that we start working and the february where we start uni, BT could give some mentoring to prepare us for university

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The university lecturers are great, they've all been fantastic so far, giving up their time to answer questions and give feedback for marks and exams that we've done with them.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • BT gives plenty of support when it comes to sorting out problems we've got (tax etc.), but especially my manager as she's brilliant, always looking out for us when things go awry, and also making sure we have a good work/university/home balance.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is not the best but it's definitely good enough for someone like me to start renting a flat and living well within Ipswich. The pay was a bit messed up for us in terms of not getting pay rises on time etc. but it's mostly been good. Also the pay once we finish is fantastic.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are loads of apprenticeship opportunities outside of work that involve volunteering and helping others. Just last week i volunteered at the national finals for the CoSpace Rescue robot challenge! Also there is a gym on site and we get many different perks for being employees here.

  • 9. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • My team is a really fantastic place to work, the university is great and the people are better. I can't speak for other apprentices and how they've done, but my experience thus far has been astounding.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Be your best self. That's all i can really say about this, you've got to shine to get recognised and appreciated within BT, they reward the best. Stay calm on the interview days and get to know people through the induction week, and most importantly, have fun!
