Corporate Tax Associate Meeting clients as part of the first stage of the compliance cycle. Drafting and finalising tax computations. Drafting queries that will ensure each item has been treated correctly for tax purposes. Getting involved in other projects e.g. due diligence, recovery & reorganisation and international group companies. Manage your own workload which gives you responsibility and helps you to perfect your time management skills.
Currently studying towards the ATT qualification then either the ACCA or CTA afterwards. Internally there are a lot of school leaver development days and team training days on specific areas of tax e.g. SDLT to sharpen awareness. Internally there is a manor house located in Bradenham where there are training courses that you attend over the course of your programme to keep you up to date with the basics. Learnt how to manage work commitments at the same time as revising for exams. Learnt how to prioritise tasks in order to be more efficient and effective at getting the job done.
The work is enjoyable as you have the opportunity to decide what work you want to get involved in. The teams are very welcoming and friendly when you first join.
There is a lot of internal recognition as there are reviews that take place in January and June where you can get an idea of how people think of your work ethic and you in general. There is also a three cheers system where you can nominate somewhere who you think has excelled in a certain area.
With ATT you attend college for a tuition phase and a revision phase where you learn and revise the material you have learnt over the course of 3 to 6 months.. This is done at Kaplan. Internally there is also the opportunity to go on a 2 week intensive course at Bradenham instead to learn the material. Internally there is a lot of support from managers if you struggle with your exam and the team will help in any way they can especially if they have already sat that qualification.
The tutors are really helpful at Kaplan and try and get back to you within an hour. They offer to stay behind after college and go over things that you aren't sure of and if you are still struggling after the revision phase you can arrange a time to go and meet your tutor one on one and go through key areas. Plenty of revision material is provided - approximately 4 questions bank and there is a course manual and course notes also.
If you struggle with anything leading up to your exams you just have to make your people manager aware and they will help in anyway they can. At Grant Thornton of you receive less than a certain percentage in a mock your manager will sit down and go though it with you and discuss what you could do to improve going forward.
As a school leaver you're likely to live at home so the only costs you will have may be travel costs, helping out your parents and yourself. The salary more than meets the needs of a typical 18 year old.
There are a lot of socials especially around Christmas time as departments go pout for a Christmas meal and then we have an office Christmas party. There is also the annual summer BBQ in about July time where new joiners who start in August have the opportunity to meet everyone. Each intake has their own outings which everyone who started in the same intake is invited to. Outside of work there is a lot of time to continue activities and hobbies that you did before you started work.
