My role is a track apprentice so I work with all components of the track including sleepers, rail, ballast and fastenings. Within my apprenticeship I do different placements these include maintenance, renewals, inspection, technical and quality surveying to name a few. Whilst on these placements I gain on the job experience of different track roles.
I have developed new skills that are involved with engineering and track maintenance whilst being on the scheme. I have also developed my personal skills including my communication and attitude.
I thouroughly enjoy the programme as no 2 days are the same, there is all different types of work to do and the roles at the end of the apprenticeship are varied. I also enjoy it as the apprenticeships make you put your mind to tasks.
I feel very valued by network rail as an employee and I feel they have helped me every step of the way so far. I feel in the future they will ensure I progress within my career.
The programme is very well organised and structured as the first 9 months are based in the classroom learning theory and techniques associated with railway engineering then after that you are given the opportunity to gain on the job experience by completing placements whilst implement what you learn when you return to the training centre.
I receive plenty of support from Babcock who ensure that if you are struggling with any assignments there is a port of call so you are not left in the dark they also ensured that any personal issues were attended to
I receive adequate support from network rail and the training they provide is of a good standard.
The salary is low to begin with as accommodation, food and transport to the training centre is all provided however this rises after the first 9 months to a reasonable amount.
There are many opportunities outside work including different schemes that are available including cycle to work scheme. There is also the opportunity to participate in charity events such as half marathons.
