I am a Cyber Security Apprentice within BT and my daily roles as an apprentice changes all the time. This is because BT allow me to rotate around all of the different departments within security, something which no other employee would get the opportunity to do. This will allow me at the end to have abetter understanding of which area I would like to enter within the industry.
On my apprenticeship I will end up with a foundation degree and an SVQ. As well as this I get trained on multiple high end platforms which are used within the industry to monitor for threats and risks. As well as this I have been allowed to further my knowledge in skills I already had like MS Office.
I enjoy the programme a lot and feel it is a great way to enter an ever growing industry. There are still some areas which need ironed out a bit to run that bit more smoothly, but apart from that its perfect.
BT has allowed me to do things that I never would have got the opportunity before. With some of the projects in which I have been involved this has allowed me to travel to the US and different parts of the UK and Europe. As well as this we have multiple benefits for being an employee like free Broadband and Line Rental etc.
The programme could be more structured in certain areas for people who's knowledge my not grow as fast as others, or who's base knowledge wasn't as strong. Sometimes though this isn't down to BT but the University who are teaching us the degree.
At university, I think they are still getting to grips with it as it is their first time with us teaching this degree. I think the tutor support or ground work given before teaching could be more in depth for people with not as much experience with computers before hand.
In house training I think is really strong. There are multiple experts in every field which I feel I could reach out to for help. BT has an Academy as well online where experts of different fields are available to answer questions.
My salary increases every year and the final wage will be more than enough. Just now though as a first year apprentice I get by, but more would be appreciated.
BT are partners with a lot of other companies and charities. This allows for BT to offer you 2 volunteering days to help out with local charities as well as do Comic Relief and other Telethons. We also have many clubs and networks in BT which allow you to socialise with others up and down the country and these clubs host events to meet up etc.
Yes
I have worked for BT from the age of 16 whilst still at school. From there they have offered me this apprenticeship in a field in which they knew I was interested and also allowed me to progress through different roles
Be prepared to become a leader. You are taught a lot of leadership skills and given many opportunities to use them. BT is a large company and will allow you to go many places.
