My job involves working as a signalling apprentice. I maintain and repair the signals which help to keep trains moving around the tracks. I could be changing components, carrying out technical inspections or even renewing a signal
I have learnt electronic engineering to a good standard including skills I had never had before. I have also improved my academic skills including maths and science.
I love the programme as it has taught me many new skills and I am learning something new everyday. I have also met made many new friends on the programme.
I feel very valued by network rail even more so after winning an award for hard working in my first year of the programme.
It is not just classroom work so the programme is structured well there is classroom training for theory and practical in the first 9 months then you are able to implement this on placements out on track learning on the job
The training provider is always available if I need extra help with studies or need personal problems addressing. There is always someone willing to help
I receive lots of support from my colleagues including managers and supervisors who have guided me through my time at network rail so far ensuring I get the best from the programme
The salary is great and when at the training centre everything is paid for so it's money saved and after the first 9 months the wage increases which is an added bonus
There are plenty of opportunities to do fundraising or activists such as running, cycling, boxing, volunteering for different events and these are all supported by network rail
