Network Engineer Review

I am a Network Test Engineer, testing all of the new protocols, updates and devices before they are installed into BT's live network. I have 1 day release a week to attend University for my Network Engineering degree, funded by BT.

I have gotten a level 4 NVQ and a foundation degree which i can optionally spend 1 extra year to 'top-up' to a bachelors with hons. BT has a lot of training for their staff on their intranet to help in any role at BT. I have learnt most of my skills on the job, testing equipment.

Great place to meet new friends for life, with all the apprentices who are around the same age, going through the same NVQ and degree. I also enjoy working on the latest equipment which is coming into BT to help deliver the UK and further internet.

Help is always around so if i am stuck i know who to go to. BT is investing a lot in its new apprentices and graduates as it knows we are the future.

Induction events, studying and NVQ are all very organised. All apprentices get designated coaches and buddy's to help them through. The only let down is not having an accurate contract / job description since arriving at the company nearly three years ago.

All of the support is need. I get whiteboard sessions on topics when i need them. The Intranet has many many training videos and i have a coach on hand if i need them.

I have regular 1:1 sessions with my line manager who provides all of the support i need.

The first year or two of my apprenticeship my salary managed to cover the bills but leave little afterwards. Now i am in my final year and have had a couple pay rises i am able to have enough left at the end of the month to have a decent social life. When i assimilate from my apprenticeship i will be going onto a lot more though.

BT gives every employee volunteering days throughout the year to get out of the office and make a difference. BT is very focused on spreading the apprenticeship to the local areas so there are always opportunities to get involved with events.

Can have a decent salary, whilst getting paid to go to University without the student loans, and getting paid to work at the same time. Similarly at the end getting offered a full time job starting with salary's of £30k.

Have an interest in IT, networking or Business. Be prepared to go to University and remain in education for the next few years. Also be prepared to present, hold calls etc.
