  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Currently I am working as a Job Controller within Harmonised Ethernet. Day to day this involves me placing and managing orders from customers for various products such as fibre and copper circuits. I am responsible for updating the customer on progression of orders as well as progressing the orders manually myself. I also receive and respond to customer emails relating to orders.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I feel my knowledge has greatly developed since starting my apprenticeship. I am currently attending college for 1 week each month and have been learning all about telecommunications. So far I have got to understand how the public service telephone network operates and how telecommunications has developed over time to become what it is today. I have also been working with the Managed Ethernet Access Service (MEAS) product as well as my current work and so am developing a whole host of skills and knowledge.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT Group?
  • I feel very valued, I have received some very positive feedback from my manager and colleagues which makes me very pleased that my work is going noticed and therefore I feel like a valued member of the team. I was also selected as the Apprentice Lead for the North, within BT Wholesale & Ventures. This involves me communicating and organising events with other apprentices in the north to ensure we are staying connected.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I am being given lots of opportunities to receive some work and training in various different areas and not just my own area of work. An example of this is I have several weeks scheduled in Hull to go and train and learn what goes on in that part of the business. I also have a clear schedule of the work I am to complete for SVQ and timelines to follow.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My current salary is sufficient for my current situation. I feel my salary is very fair. I am currently looking to move out of my family home (which I do pay rent for) however in my first year of apprenticeship this was looking a bit costly for me. However I am aware that my salary increases after my first year and so moving out is something I may look at once this comes around.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are lots of opportunities available outside of work. I have volunteered to help at various charity events including the children in need telethon. There is also a great bunch of colleagues in the office who are all very sociable so I often spend time out of work with work colleagues. We have also organised five a side football for folk in the office which I thoroughly enjoy.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think it is a great place to work in a growing industry. The work is very interesting as well as challenging but If you have an interest in the work then it is greatly enjoyable and rewarding. There are loads of opportunities available as an apprentice here and I feel this is just the beginning of a long and happy career within BT.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • I would advise them to come in with a very keen attitude. I really feel that you get out what you put in here and there are so many great opportunities available for you if you want them. I couldn't recommend BT enough. For the application process and interviews I would advise people to just be themselves. I was very interested in this apprenticeship and this definitely showed in my interview and I came across as a keen candidate.
