I am an off track apprentice for network rail which involves maintaining all aspects off the track. This includes managing trees and hedges, maintaining fencing and boundaries and ensuring network rail staff can access the track safely.
I have learnt how to use small plant and different tools that are used in my role such as chainsaws and hand tools. I have developed knowledge of the railway and improved my personal abilities including the way I problem solved and my communication skills.
I like the programme as I am always doing something different every day. I work outside in all weathers and no two days are the same. I am using different tools and problem solving all the time which ensures I am always busy.
I feel very valued by network rail my supervisors and managers ensure I understand my role and help me progress with tasks. My colleagues also help me within my role.
The programme is well structured and consists of gaining experience on the job through placements with different teams. Classroom based learning is completed for the first 9 months and staggered whilst on gaining on the job experience.
I receive enough support from my training provider to progress on the programme. If I ever need any assistance there is always someone to contact.
Network rail help me with my progress within the programme. If I need any help with my studies I can always be sure there will be someone to help.
The salary and package meet my costs quite well apart from the first year when the salary was quite low however the accommodation, food and travel was all provided.
There are many opportunities outside of work one of them being fundraising activities. I completed a 10km run and raised money for a network rail charity. There is also many opportunities to take part in sports and other opportunities.
