I am a project management higher apprentice. Daily tasks depend on which placement we are place as they can cover a wide variety of the business including risk management, project controls, planning and project area teams. This can include things such as leading meetings, creating metrics, solving emergent issues and talking to a wide variety of people in the business.
The apprenticeship develops a wide variety of behavioural skills mainly communication, teamwork, initiative, self-management and self confidence. It provides a Foundation degree in Project Management, Higher Apprenticeship in project management and the opportunity to take training courses along the way to improve knowledge and skill. The higher apprenticeship includes a professional qualification for the Association of Project Management (APM) which is highly recognised.
The company culture is great as everyone is willing to help you out and develop you in the early careers department and in the work teams. The programme has definitely exceeded my expectations and has developed me into a professional individual - something which I don't think would have been achievable from attending university instead.
Everyone in the company treats higher apprentices as valuable from my experience. We are allowed to get involved with high level projects and difficult tasks, and a yearly review process allows recognition from managers.
Very well - placements are 4 months long and there is a plan together detailing which placements we will go to cover all competencies. We are assessed against these competencies regularly. We have to provide a list of placement of objectives for each placement to ensure we are given challenging tasks, and then review all tasks at the end of each placement.
The tutors are always happy to answer queries and provide guidance if needed. The lessons are well prepared and there is a library of resources if required.
We have three contacts of support if needed: our early careers team, placement manager/team and functional manager. These are there to help with all types of queries; work and personal.
Very well - the salary is above average for apprenticeships in the area. This more than covers off living/travel costs and is very high for the location.
There is a strong work and early careers community with regular social gatherings such as quiz nights, trips away, conferences, balls, sports clubs.
